Essential Tremors are usually hereditary. It is a very slowly progressing tremor; Patients generally have this type of tremor for many years, and it stays at a mild degree so that they don’t seek medical attention. After many years, the tremor could become more severe at which time the patients seek medical attention. This type of tremor is usually noticed when the hands are being used like lifting a cup or writing. Unlike Parkinson’s disease, there is usually no resting tremor and there are no associated symptoms.
Diagnosis of Essential Tremors:
The diagnosis is made based the patients symptoms and the physician’s exam. Usually the diagnosis is made without further testing, but if there is a doubt then further testing could be done.
Treatments for Essential Tremors:
There are several different classes of medications that we use to treat essential tremors. Often our patients see significant improvement with medications alone. In the cases where medciations are not effective then botox injections and surgical interventions are possible.
