Lower back pain treatment- main causes

The low back is a delicate part of the human anatomy. With jelly-like discs, vulnerable vertebrae, and a network of nerves all prone to injury it can be difficult to treat because of its complex structure. Having bones and muscles supported by cartilage, tendons and ligaments; fed by a network of blood vessels and nerves it is a must to take great care of this part of the body. The structures that make up the back are very complicated and as a result even a slight injury or slippage of different structures could cause severe pain.

Main causes of lower back pain:

Over time, bone strength, muscle elasticity and tone have a tendency to decrease. The discs in the back will lose their fluid and flexibility in turn decreasing the ability to absorb shocks against the spine that could be caused by running or jumping. A sedentary lifestyle causes weakening of the back muscles leading to loss of support to the spinal column making the spine prone to injury. Mechanical injury could be caused by heavy lifting. If the spine is strained beyond a certain level, a disc may rupture or bulge outward compressing one of the more than 50 nerves of the spinal cord that are in charge of body movements and sensation. When the nerve roots become compressed or irritated it could result in back pain, muscle weakness, or sciatica.

Some of the conditions coupled with lower back pain include the following like:

  • Bulging disc
  • Sciatica
  • Spinal degeneration
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Skeletal irregularities
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Spondylolisthesis

Back pain treatment:

When you are suffering from back pain, you should be acquainted with your options, surgery for lower back pain should be the final option, however there are several other option. Before going under the knife there are other possibilities for a cure. Prevention is the key. Proper posture and simple exercises can help strengthen the back muscles reducing the chance for injury. Back pain treatment will be based on the cause of the pain and amount of injury. It will determine whether medications, physical therapy, epidural injections, or surgery will be the best option. Surgery will be the considered for patients where there is severe nerve damage and when the pain becomes uncontrollable. Proper diagnosis, MRI, and nerve testing are done to make sure that the surgery is the best option.
