Treatments for Essential Tremors

Essential tremor is a common neurological disorder which is also known as familial tremor, benign essential tremor or hereditary tremor. Causing a rhythmic trembling it involves tremor of the arms, hands or fingers however, it involves the head or other body parts. Often confused with Parkinson’s disease and dystonia, it intensifies when one tries to use the affected muscles.Though it may affect any part of your body, tremor often occurs in your hands

It is most common in people who are at their 40’s and older. Essential tremor is often serene and non-progressive however for some it can be severe and have an effect on even daily activities like writing, eating and getting dressed. Be it a tremor of the head or hands, it is hard to become casual when it happens in social situations

There are three different types of tremors and it includes:

• Postural tremor is a common type seen when a person is voluntarily maintaining a fixed position. This type of tremor is relatively fine.

• Internal tremor is a feeling of general instability, which often comes with a sensation of vibration inside the body.

• Classified as a severe tremor, they can disrupt your day-to-day activity like writing, drinking from a cup, or buttoning a shirt.

Essential tremors treatment - Not all will require treatment but, there are treatment options based on symptom severity. Caffeine should be avoided, stress management is important along with good sleep. Medication choices include beta blockers, timolol nadolol, anti-epileptic primidone is also effective. When medications do not control the tremor botulinum toxin or deep brain stimulation may be considered. Occupational therapy can also be helpful. Even though it may not give an impression of dangerous state, it worsens overtime and can be severe in some people
