Problem Solving For Myasthenia Gravis Treatment

Myasthenia gravis is a neuromuscular disorder that involves the communication between the muscles and nerves leading to fluctuating muscle weakness and fatigability. It is a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disease differentiated by varying degrees of weakness of the skeletal muscles. It is commonly found in women in their 20s and 30s and men in their 70s and 80s, however, it can occur at any age. If the disease progresses, it can become life threatening. Myasthenia gravis patients could have a normal life expectancy, but in severe cases it could cause breathing problems leading to respiratory failure.

The following are some of the symptoms of Myasthenia gravis: muscles of the eyes are likely to be affected first. In the long run, most patients with myasthenia gravis will experience eye symptoms. With that said, there are other symptoms as well and following are some of them:

. double or distorted vision

. trouble in chewing or swallowing

. lack of ability to stand up without pushing with the hands

. unsteady or unusual walk

. weakness in the arms and legs

. weakness in the muscles of facial expression

In regards to the treatment options for Myasthenia gravis, there are several therapies that can be used to reduce and improve the muscle weakness. Anticholinesterase agents such as pyridostigmine are some of the medications used to treat this disorder. It helps improve neuromuscular transmission and increase muscle strength. Prednisone, azathioprine, cyclosporin, mycophenolate mofetil, and tacrolimus are other immunosuppressive drugs that can be used to treat Myasthenia Gravis. It improves muscle strength by suppressing the production of abnormal antibodies however it is a must that Myasthenia Gravis patients who take these medications should be carefully monitored by a physician since they may cause major side effects.
